Q

What causes Parkinson’s disease to occur?

A

Parkinson’s is caused by a lack of dopamine being produced, due to death of neurons in the substantia nigra. Dopamine balances the release of neurotransmitter Acetylcholine, which brings about muscle movement. Therefore without dopamine, Acetylcholine release is left unchecked. This means that smooth muscle control is lost and tremors develop.
