Electrical Safety Flashcards
what may metals need in order for them to not give us an electric shock
1) Earthing
2) Insulating
what is an earth wire
an earth wire is a low resistance wire that connect the metal case to the ground
explain the use of an earth wire
1) if the casing is touched by the wire inside an appliance the current will flow through the earth wire
2) because the resistance of the earth wire is low, a high current will run through it breaking the fuse in the device
what happens when the fuse in a device is broken
when the fuse in a device is broken the flow of the current will stop making the appliance safe
why is plastic used as a safety material
1) plastic is an insulator, so it acts as an extra layer of insulation this makes the appliance double insulated
when doesn’t an appliance need an earth wire
when it is double insulated
