Electrical Safety Flashcards
Why Study Electricity?
• Safe use of tools
• Lighting
• Overall salon safety
What is a Electrical Current?
• The flow of electricity along a conductor in a complete circuit.
• Direct Current(DC): Even flowing, constant current that travels in one direct. Ex. flashlights, cell phones, handheld devices.
• Alternating Current(AC): Rapid interrupted current, flowing first in one direction and then the opposite direction.
What is a Conductor?
• Any material that easily conducts electricity.
Example: metals, copper, water.
• Non-conductor: a substance that does not conduct electricity. Rubber, silk, wood, glass, cement are good insulators.
What is a Fuse?
Prevents excessive current from passing through the circuit. “Blowing the fuse”.
What is a Circuit Breaker?
A switch that automatically interrupts or shuts off an electrical circuit.
What is a Voltage?
•Pressure from an electrical circuits power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop
•voltage = pressure
• Measured in volts
• (think of the flow of water)
What is a Amperage (AMP)?
• Measures the strength of an electrical current.
• A wire must be large enough to carry the amount of electricity (amps) through.
What is Wattage?
Measures how much energy is used in 1 second.
Ex. 40 watt lightbulb
What is Resistance? health and safety
Measured in ohms, the higher the resistance, the lower the flow of energy.
What is Grounding?
Carries the current away, added safety to protect the plug from getting lose and preventing shock.
What are ways to Maintain Electrical Safety in the Salon?
• If a fuse blows, unplug tool.
• Keeping water away from outlets.
• Don’t keep things with exposed wires, fix damaged cords on tools.
• Turn heat sources off.
What is Electrotherapy?
• Use of electrical currents to treat the skin and hair growth.
• Electrode (probe) conducts the electrical current from the machine to the client’s skin.
• Polarity: a positive or negative electronic current
What Is the OHSA?
O- occupational
H- health
S- safety
A- act
Sets out the rights, procedures and duties of all parties in the workplace.
What is WHMIS?
W- workplace
H- hazardous
M- materials
I- information
S- system
Hazard classification, cautionary labelling of containers, the requirements of safety data sheets (SDS) as well as worker education and training programs.
What is SDS?
S- safety
D- data
S- sheet
information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for. handling, storing, and transporting the chemical
