Electrical - Power Flashcards
Define electrical power.
Is the rate at which electrical current flows through a circuit.
P = IV
What is the unit of electrical power?
Watt (W)
How many Watts make 1 Horsepower?
746W
What is a danger of passing a constant high current through a conductor?
Over-production of heat, which causes damage to conductor/Insulation.
Name 2 types of fuse.
- Cartridge fuse
- HRC (high rupturing capacity)
What does the fuse protect from damage?
A power supply or source
What happens to the quartz powder in a HRC fuse when the fuse blows and what does this prevent?
The quartz powder melts and fills the gap between the two fuse wire ends. Quartz is an insulator, so no arc is possible.
What is the electrical potential of the sea?
0 Volts
List 3 things than can cause an earth fault in a circuit.
- Dampness
- Insulation becoming hard or brittle with age or heat
- Accidental damage
