Electrical Conductivity Flashcards
1
Q
The trend of electrical conductivity in the solid state?
A
Na, Mg, Al -> high
Si -> Low (semi-conductor)
P4, S8, Cl2 -> none
2
Q
Why Na, Mg, Al are good conductor of electricity?
A
- presence of delocalised electrons acting as mobile carrier
- increase as the no of valence electrons contributes to the delocalised electron cloud increase
3
Q
Why P4, S8 and Cl2 are non-electrical conductor?
A
- all valence electrons involved in forming bonds
- no mobile electrons act as mobile charge carrier
