Q

what happens when a polythene rod is rubbed with a dry cloth?

A

the dry cloth ransfers electrons to the surface atoms of the rod on to the cloth. so the polythene rod becomes negatively charged and the dry cloth becomes positively charged

Q

what about when you rub a perspex rod with a dry cloth?

A

electrons transfer from the dry cloth to the surface atoms on the rod. perspex rod becomes positively charged. positive charge = to negative charge on dry cloth

Q

opposite charges attract…

eg. negatively charged rod brought close to positively charged rod = them pulling together (attraction)

A

like charges repel.

eg negatively charged plastic rod is brought near to another negatively charged rod = them moving appart (repulsion)

Q

what does the direction of arrows representing fields show?

A

the way a POSITIVE charge will be pushed. field lines point away from positive charges and towards negative charges.

Q

what does it mean if the arrows are closer together?

A

the stronger the field and the greater the force experienced by charges in that field. This means that the field is stronger closer to the object.
