Electric Fields Flashcards
What is electric field strength?
Force per unit positive charge experienced by a body in an electric field
What is a uniform field?
Two parallel plates where the field strength is the same at every point
What happens to a particle in a uniform field?
Accelerates at right angles to the particles original motion and field lines (parabolic path)
What direction is electric field strength in?
It’s a vector in the direction of the positive charge
What if q is a point charge?
E-r graph extends infinitely
What is a isn’t a point charge?
It’s not an inverse square law (go across on Electric field strength st surface to find radius of the sphere)
What is electric potential?
The electric potential energy that a unit positive charge would have at a point
+Q = repulsive force = +V
-Q = attractive force = -V
What is electric potential difference?
The energy needed to move a unit charge between 2 points (tends towards 0 as r increases to infinity)
What are equipotentials?
Lines where potential is the same ( no work done moving along them )
