Electric Fields Flashcards
Define an electric field
A region of space within which a charged particle experiences a force
What is the equation of Electric Field Strength?
E=F/Q (force per unit charge)
What are the units of Electric Field Strength?
Newtons per Coulomb, NC^-1
What gives the field direction?
The direction a small positively charged particle will move in the field
What are the characteristics of a uniform field?
Poles and field lines equidistant
Uniform field strength
What are the characteristics of a radial field?
Field lines equiangular (same angle between each)
Field strength decreases away from pole
What factors affect Electric Field Strength?
PD across field
Distance of plates from each other
What is the alternate equation for EFS given the factors that affect it?
E=V/d (Volt per metre apart)
What is electric potential?
The potential energy that a coulomb of positive charge would have if placed at a specific point in the field
What does an equipotential surface do?
Join points of equal potential (they are perpendicular to field lines)
