Linear Accelerator Advantages and Disadvantages

A

High cost as a result of shielding and building requirements because Accelerator must be long

Q

Cyclotron advantages and disadvantages

A

Smaller than linear accelerator - cheaper to build
- Path radius increases as particle increases velocity - moves towards Dee edge
At high velocity relativistic effects interfere with efficiency making it difficult to adapt fields in line with particle

Q

Synchrotron (type of cyclotron) advantages/disadvantages

A

Energy loss caused by synchrotron radiation being emitted
Synchrotron built to produce this at certain frequencies for scientific and medical purposes
Rather than accelerate particles

Q

Linear Accelerator description

A

Charged particle attracted towards drift tube plate
Passes through and us accelerated towards next tube…next tube
Field in between each tube must change rapidly so that each new tube attracts particle leaving previous one
Kept in line by magnets

Q

Cyclotron description

A

Magnets keep circular orbit
High frequency supply accelerates particles
Two Dee’s with small gap and high Potential difference in between
Charged particle accelerated across and bent inside a dee until in opposite direction
Goes between dees until at correct energy to be released

Q

Why an ALTERNATING voltage is used in a cyclotron?

A

Used to change the direction of the force on protons
Electric field must change direction in order to accelerate the protons because direction which protons are crossing gap keeps changing
