Why is there a need for electric bikes ?
It can be difficult to pedal up hills or carry heavy loads - Electric bikes make this easier
How do electrical lights on bikes work ?
As the wheels rotate, a small dynamo attached to it which induces a current inside a coil of wires. The electricity generated powers the light
How does an electric bike, using the same idea as a bike light ?
The lamp is replaced with a battery which is charged by the dynamo. The battery works with an electric motor which spins the wheel without any need to pedal
What is the most important part of an electric bike ?
The battery - it contains all the power that will drive you along
What two features are needed from the battery ?
- They need to store lots of electricity
2. To be light so power isn’t wasted moving the heavy battery
What type of battery is usually used ?
A lightweight Lithium-ion battery
How do you extend the range of a bike’s battery ?
The more pedaling you do the more it charges. The more it is charged, the longer it will last.
Where is the electric motor often located ?
Most electric motors are found built into the hub (center of the wheel)
