Electric Flashcards
Definition of “Matter”
Matter is the substance of which all objects are composed. It is everything that is observable in the universe.
Matter is comprised of…
Hint-2
Different atoms that form molecules.
Groups of molecules are called compounds.
Elements are….
An element is matter, that consists of only one type of atom.
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into different kinds of matter.
More than 100 elements are identified, Oxygen Iron Copper Etc.
Composition of an Atom,
3 primary particles
Atoms are the smallest component of an element.
Retains all the properties of that element.
Composed of three primary particles,
Protons(+)- positive electric charge
Electrons(-)-negative electric charge
Neutrons (0)- no electric charge
Protons (+)and Neutrons (0) are located in the nucleus.
Electrons (-) orbit around the nucleus.
Electrical charge
*how protons and electrons interact
Electrical charge creates force in every atom.
Electrons have a negative charge and protons have a positive charge.
Attraction:
Protons and electrons attract to one another in a 1:1 ration (pairs).
Protons repel protons
Electrons repel electrons
Effects of electrical charge
Protons (+) apply attraction force to electrons (-) to hold them in their orbit.
If protons (+) positive charge is equal to electrons (-) negative charge, the atom is then NEUTRALLY CHARGED
Balanced Atoms vs. Imbalanced Atoms
Balanced Atoms (no charge) Equal number of electrons and protons, considered to be, neutral or balanced.
-balanced number of protons(+) to electrons (-).
Ex: 1 proton (+), 1 electron (-)
29 protons (+), 29 electrons (-)
Imbalanced Atoms (Ion)- occurs when an atom looses or gains an Electron (-) the particle which orbits the nucleus.
Positive Ion: 2 Protons (+) -inside the nucleus 1 Electron (-) -orbiting the nucleus
Negative Ion: 2 Protons (+) -inside nucleus 3 Electrons (-) -orbiting nucleus
***imbalanced Ions are responsible for the flow of ELECTRONS (-) or ELECTRICITY
Ion Interaction
*Electro Static Field (electricity)
Explain
An Ion with a positive charge is attracted to an ion with a negative charge. Ions with the same charge (positive or negative) will repel from each other.
The attraction or repulsion between the two ions is due to a force that runs between the two charges that’s called, the Electro Static Field or ELECTRICITY.
How an electrically balanced Atom can be altered by an external force. *3 forces
External forces:
Magnetism
Heat
Light
These can cause electrons (-) to leave their atoms.
Static electricity
When an atom looses an electron (-), due to an outside force (magnetism, heat, light), the electron leaves the atom and causes an imbalance (ion) “static electricity” on the surface of an object.
It’s “static” because the displaced electrons tend to be stationary after moving from one material to another.
Electric Potential
The force used to move one electrically charged object to another, electrons (-).
Think of static electricity
Behavior of atoms
Hint-electron flow
You can predict the behavior of electrons based on the configuration and location of electrons (-).
Electrons (-) that orbit in (Valence Ring- the outermost orbiting ring of an atom) are free electrons (-).
Free electrons can can move from one atom to another because they are loosely held to the nucleus.
This movement is called, electron flow or electricity.
