Electoral College Flashcards
A plurality of the voters of each state
elect a group of electors equal to the states representation in congress.
The candidates that gets a plurality of the voters
in a state gets all of that states elecotrals votes.
The electors cast two ballots
One for president and one for vice president (electors cannot vote for two people from the same state)
The ballots are sent to the president of the senate to be counted.
A majority of the 538 electoral votes or 270 votes is required for a winner.
If there is NOT a winner
the house voting as states elects the president from the top three vote getters and the senate, voting individually, elects the vice president from the top two.
The Electoral college is criticized as being undemocratic and unfair for three reasons
Faithless electorals, someone who doesnt get the majority, illegal electors
reason 1 Faithless electoral
someone who doesnt vote the way they say they would.
reasons 2
Because a person who did not recieve a majority of the popular votes can be elected due to winner take all electoral votes rule.
reason 3illegal electors
The electoral college prevents a run-off election
