What are the amendments that are gonna happen ?
- amendment of section 23 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1950, enabling the linking of electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem
- The bill proposes four qualifying dates (the first day of the months - January, April, July and October) for updating the voting rolls for those who have turned 18
- registration of ‘wives of service voters’ will now be replaced by ‘spouse’. making it gender neutral
- Furnishing Aadhar details is not mandatory and those who cannot furnish due to relevant reasons(given by govt) can give alternative documents
What are the issues of the bill?
- The linking of Aadhaar with voter IDs violates the fundamental right to privacy as provided by the Supreme Court of India in Puttaswamy case.
- Linking Aadhaar and IDs might enable non-citizens to vote.
- Though, linking will not lead to identification of voting choices, but there is a concern that it will lead to profiling
