Elecions & Campaigns Flashcards
Super PACs
can collect unlimited amounts of donations (soft money) and can spend it on whatever. (supports negativity, more money in politics) you could put a Super PAC in charge of your advertisements since they have no limit in spending, but it can not have direct contact with the candidate that it is supporting. (can be a corporation, a labor union, or an individual)
Political Actions Committees (PACs)
is an organization that is allowed to collect money from an interest group or corporation and use that money to indirectly support candidate(s). (limited amount of money it can take in and spend)
Hard Money
use that money to support directly on a candidate running for office (hard money) limited amount of money “candidate advocacy
Soft Money
money that PAC’s spend for “issue advocacy” [anything] (soft money) goes to things like voter education, not directly to the candidate. unlimited spending
Retrospective Voting
voting based on what politicians did
Negative Campaigning
using your opponents down falls against his to sway the public’s opinion about that person. Proven to be more effective than positive campaigning, although its tends to put a bad light on both candidates, but more so on the person who you are attack.
Prospective Voting
looking towards what politicians say they will do; it is how voter tend to vote
Positive Campaigning
Self-promoting a candidate or highlighting a candidate’s accomplishments and their goals rather than defaming the opposing candidate. This is seen to be less effective in campaigning nowadays
Swing State
Examples from the past election is Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida. Theses states had a lot of electoral votes that the state was divided by Republicans and Democrats. What presidents do is they pay special attention to these states and put extra finances into these states. these states have the power to “swing” the election to one party or the other hence the name. the problem with this is that some states are not focused on and might not have the candidates visit. For example North Dakota they have barely any electoral votes and does not have a huge effect on the election so they do not get visits from the candidates
