Q

what is systemic error

A

is a logical or proportional difference between observed and true values. (e.g., a miscalibrated scale consistently registers weights as higher than they actually are).

Q

sensory function

A

sensing changes in and out of body. Eyes sense light, ear responds to sound waves, stomach has stretch receptors (knows when full) chemical receptors detect acidity in the blood

Integrative function

A

processing the info sent from sensory organs. This info is stored as memory. A proper response is initiated

Q

neuron structure

A

consists of a dendrite (receive data from another neuron) an axon (sends signals to other neurons) and a nucleus.

16
Q

What is myelin sheath?

A

a fatty material that surrounds the axon, and speeds up the rate that nerve impulses travel at.

17
Q

endocrine system

A

releases hormones in the body in response to changes in the body. E.g. insulin and glucagon (islets of Langerhans) are released from the pancreas when the blood glucose level is above or below the optimum. ADH is released when body is dehydrated, and tells the kidney to absorb more water, but if the body is very hydrated, less ADH is released.

18
Q

Compare features of the nervous and endocrine system

A

Nervous system consists of nerves, which transmit electrical impulses. Hormones, which are chemical messengers are carried in the blood, and these make up the endocrine system.

19
Q

motor neurons

A

Transmit impulses from sensory or relay neuron to an effector like a muscle or gland

20
Q

sensory neurons

A

transmits impulses from sensory receptor cell to relay or motor neuron

21
Q

relay neurons

A

transmit impulses between neurons

22
Q

What is action potential?

A

a rapid sequence of charges across a membrane.
an explosion of electrical activity that is created by a depolarizing current.

23
Q

What is concentration gradient in terms of action potential

A

the difference in ion concentrations between the inside of the neuron and the outside of the neuron (called extracellular fluid).

24
Q

papillae

A

small lumps of tissue on tongue
