Elec, magn, coordination Flashcards
What is the symbol for diode?
arrow shape in circle
symbol for LED
diode with arrows pointing away
Thermistor symbol
resistor plus hockey stick in front
fuse symbol
Resistor with horizontal line running through it
transformer symbol
a vertical line, and either side is a cartoon foot, with each toe parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the line
what does a step-down transformer do?
A Step-down transformer decreases the voltage incoming to the site by increasing the electrical current
What is the advantage of transmitting electricity at a high potential difference?
less thermal energy is transferred to the surrounding
what is potential difference?
the difference in electric potential between two points.
What is random error?
Unpredictable variation between measurements that leads to a spread of values about the true value
what is systemic error
is a logical or proportional difference between observed and true values. (e.g., a miscalibrated scale consistently registers weights as higher than they actually are).
sensory function
sensing changes in and out of body. Eyes sense light, ear responds to sound waves, stomach has stretch receptors (knows when full) chemical receptors detect acidity in the blood
Integrative function
processing the info sent from sensory organs. This info is stored as memory. A proper response is initiated
Motor function
Muscles and glands respond to stimuli, by contracting or secreting respectively.
neurons
carry nerve impulses, just as electrons carry charge
neuron structure
consists of a dendrite (receive data from another neuron) an axon (sends signals to other neurons) and a nucleus.
What is myelin sheath?
a fatty material that surrounds the axon, and speeds up the rate that nerve impulses travel at.
endocrine system
releases hormones in the body in response to changes in the body. E.g. insulin and glucagon (islets of Langerhans) are released from the pancreas when the blood glucose level is above or below the optimum. ADH is released when body is dehydrated, and tells the kidney to absorb more water, but if the body is very hydrated, less ADH is released.
Compare features of the nervous and endocrine system
Nervous system consists of nerves, which transmit electrical impulses. Hormones, which are chemical messengers are carried in the blood, and these make up the endocrine system.
motor neurons
Transmit impulses from sensory or relay neuron to an effector like a muscle or gland
sensory neurons
transmits impulses from sensory receptor cell to relay or motor neuron
relay neurons
transmit impulses between neurons
What is action potential?
a rapid sequence of charges across a membrane.
an explosion of electrical activity that is created by a depolarizing current.
What is concentration gradient in terms of action potential
the difference in ion concentrations between the inside of the neuron and the outside of the neuron (called extracellular fluid).
papillae
small lumps of tissue on tongue
