What is elder abuse?
the infliction of physical or mental injury; or the deprivation of food, shelter, clothing, or services necessary to maintain the physical or mental health of an older person or persons with a developmental disability with lawful authority.
At what age are you considered an elder/senior citizen?
What is a vulnerable adult?
Considered and elder/senor citizen 60YO and up
Vulnerable adult is a person age 60 or older (& 18YO or older with disability) who is being abused neglected or exploited.
Risk factors of Victims of Elder abuse?
What are some barriers to reporting elder abuse?
age, social isolation, extreme dependence and failty, severe mental and/or physical illness, female gender, low to modest financial resources
Barriers:
- fear
- protecting the abuser
- social isolation
- self-blame/denial
- inability to report
Describe:
- physical abuse
- behavioral abuse
Physical: physical force that results in bodily injury, pain, or impairment. Includes assault, battery, and inappropriate restraint.
Behavioral: delay between onset of injury and seeking medical care. Victims are often taken to different medical facilities for tx.

is an escalating pattern of violence or intimidation by an intimate partner, which is used to gain power and control.
Hoard:
- extreme emotional attachment
- difficulty with decision making
- perfectionism
- responsibility
- fear of making a mistake
Financial exploitation:
-illegal or improper use of an older persons funds, property or resources.

treatable factors:
- poor nutrition
- dehydration
- depression
- medication interaction
- sleep deprivation

Polyvictimization: exposure to multiple types of violence or victimization
when is gaurdianship utilized?
utilized when a person can no longer make or communicate safe or sound decisions about his/her person and/or property or has become susceptible to fraud or undue influence.
(Make medical decisions in the best interest of the patient)
