elctricity Flashcards
what does the live wire do?
it alternates between a high positive and negative voltage of about 230V
what does the neutral wire do?
voltage always at 0
what does the earth wore do?
and fuse/circuit breaker. they work together and are just for safety. they prevent fires and the risk of shocks.
what is earthing?
appliances with metal cases must be earthed to reduce risk of electric shocks and fires. It is when you attach the metal casing to the earth wire. A strong current surges through the earth wire because it has a very low resistance. This breaks the fuse and disconnects the appliance.
what is insulating?
if an appliance has a plastic casing it is said to be double insulated. double insulation doesn’t need an earth wire.
