Elastomers Flashcards
What are elastomers?
Elastomers have long chain molecules that can be considered to be coils( they act link spring - expand and contract to their original shape). This gives elastomers their elastic properties.
What are thermoplastic elastomers (TPE)?
Are elastomers that can be used with conventional equipment associated with thermoplastic polymer, e.g. injection and blow moulding.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of thermoplastic elastomers?
Thermoplastic elastomers are recyclable.
Thermoplastic elastomers can make a wide range of applications including electrical components, kitchen items; seals and hoses for a range of automotive and industrial applications.
What is liquid silicon rubber (LSR)?
LSR is a thermosetting elastomer made up of two components, one being a catalyst. Both are mixed together in liquid form to a high degree of consistency. It is then processed by a ram which forces the liquid into a heated mould.
What is the main advantage liquid silicon rubber?
LSR has the ability to maintain its insulating and elastomeric characteristics over a wide temperature range (-50°C to 250°C).
LSR can be used to make electrical conductors, baby products, kitchen products and a range of medical equipment.
