EL4- The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the elements in group 1 known as?
Alkali metals
Where are the transition metals on the periodic table, and why is it called the d-block?
Between groups 2 and 3
Highest energy electrons are in d orbital
What are metalloids and where are they on the periodic table?
Elements that have properties of both metals and non-metals, found either side of ‘staircase line’
Where are halogens found on periodic table?
Group 7
What are group 8/0 elements known as?
Noble gases
Does reactivity increase going down or up group, in s-block?
Increases going down group
Are transition metals reactive or unreactive?
Unreactive
Describe and explain the trend in boiling points across period 3
- in groups 1-4 boiling point is high and increasing; elements have giant structure and so lots of energy is needed to break metallic/covalent bonds
- in groups 5-8 boiling point is low; elements have simple structure with weak VDW forces, less energy required to break bonds
What kind of ions do group 2 elements form?
+2 ions
