- named after Christ child
- is a slight warming of the waters near the coast of Peru taking place annually

- used when talking about the extreme weather warming situations in the equatorial Pacific
- El Niño (EN) represents the ocean water interactions (change in water temperatures)
- Southern Oscillation (SO) represents the atmospheric interactions (change in pressure areas)
