Q

what are the steps in acid/base interpretation?

A
  1. Is the pH life threatening or requiring immeciate intervetion?
  2. Is the pH acidotic or alkalemic?
  3. Could the entire blood gas be from increased or decreased PaCO2?
  4. If NO….Is there evedince of chronic respiratory disturbance or acute metabolic disturbance?
  5. If an acute metabolic disturbence is present is it accompanied by appropriate respiratory changes?
  6. Is there an anion gap? (if high = metabolic acidosis)
  7. Are the clinical data consistent with proposed interpretation?
