(mid 1800s) 1840-1850; came from Northern & Western Europe; many were Protestants; many knew English; customs were similar to those already living in the U.S.

(1800+) ; came from Southern & Eastern Europe; may Jewish, Catholic, or Orthodox Christian; many did not speak or understand English; customs were very different & they did not fit into “American” society as well
