Effects- Alan Jenkins Flashcards
“I held her hand” vs. “On the hand I held”
“I held her hand”- intimate display of affection before description of mother’s unnoticed duty of love.
“On the hand I held”- syntax changes between these two references, within the cyclical structure, that describes the helplessness of her hands now after his reinforced descriptions of her physical labour.
Before she is taking an active role in caring for him, resembling the loss of relationship at this end point.
Second voice
Mother’s voice introduced- defies the previously presented difficulty in showing love through words (her presence in a way that makes sense to her son is stronger in absence).
Desperation for connection, as around this point verbs of labour transform into helplessness “fumble” “drooled” “stared” - unable to show love through physical acts. Openness in the way her middle class son understands it comes from a more closed off state of desperation from the mothers perspective.
