Effective data visualizations Flashcards
what is the David McCandless method?
Inform, Story,Goal,Visual form.
Information
the data with which you’re working
Story
a clear and compelling narrative or concept
Goal
a specific objective or function for the visual
visual form
an effective use of metaphor or visual expression
Effective visualization questions
What is the practical question? What does the data say? What does the visual say?
mark
are basic visual objects such as points ,line, and shapes. Every mark can be broken down into four qualities.
what are the four qualities of a mark?
position, size,shape,color
position
where a specific mark in a space relative to a scale or to other marks
Size
how big, small, long,or tall is the mark
shape
does the shape of the specific object communicate something about it?
color
what color is the mark?
channels
are visual aspects or variables that represent characteristics of the data in a visualization.
Accuracy
are the channels helpful in accurately estimating the values being represented?
pop out
how easy it it to distinguish certain values from others?
grouping
how effective is a channel at communicating groups that exist in the data
Correlation
in statistics is the measure of the degree to which two variables move in relationship to each other
Causation
refers to the idea that an event leads to specific outcome
what si the difference between correlation and causation?
Correlation: There is a positive correlation between the number of hours of sleep a person gets and their academic performance.
Causation: Getting more sleep causes people to perform better academically.
Correlation: There is a negative correlation between the amount of money a person earns and their happiness.
Causation: Earning more money does not necessarily make people happier.
in your data analysis ,remember to
critically analyze correlation that you find
examine the data’s context to determine if a causation makes sense
understand the limitations of the tools that you use for analysis
decision tree
is a decision-making tool that allows you to make decisions based on key questions that you can answer yourself
