Effect of temp, conc, pressure + Catalysts Flashcards
Meaning of the term rate of reaction.
the speed at which a chemical reaction occurs.
Effect of temperature
Increasing temp: particles will have more kinetic energy therefore particles will move faster. Collisions will occur more often and with greater energy.
more collisions have energy greater than the activation energy. therefore increased rate of reaction
therefore, higher temp will shift the graph to the right so that more molecules will have energy greater than or equal to the activation energy.
vice versa for lower temp.
Effect of concentration and pressure.
concentration: more molecules in the same volume therefore more successful collisions therefore rate of reaciton increases.
pressure: molecules are packed closer together in a smaller volume. maxwell-boltzmann distribution shifts to the right.
Effect of catalysts + graph
catalyst: a biological molecule that speeds up reaction without being used up.
Catalysts work by providing an alternative pathway and therefore a lower activation energy.
