Q

What is the process of cocaine’s effect on the body?

2

A

1) Blocks re-uptake of dopa by binding with dopa transporter molecules on terminal buttons
2) Synapse flooded with surplus quantities of dopamine, available to bind w post synaptic receptors = sense of euphoria

Q

Evaluate effect of recreational drugs

3

A

1 common procedure involves lesioning the MCL pathway in mice brains (Schroeder). Neurons unable to produce lvl of dopa associated w reward. Mice fail self administer cocaine intravenously

Human brain = ^complex. Can’t be explained by 1 drug mode of action. Interactions of dopa w other NT systems (GABA) aren’t understood

^Treatment for addiction. Other drugs developed w reverse mode of action. Naloxone blocks opiate receptors/stops morphine from occupying them >withdrawal symptoms
