Anti-social effect of media. What are the studies?

A

SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY - Bandura - three conditions. Children watch a man act aggressively towards Bobo doll.Then…1) rewarded 2) punished 3) neutral. Found that those children who watched the man act aggressively towards the doll, then also acted most aggressively to the doll.
COGNITIVE PRIMING -
Murray - When watching violent films, areas of the brain linked to episodic memory, emotion and arousal became active. (children)

What are the two explanations for effect of media on behaviour?

A

SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY - Observe Store Imitate. Three factors that affect imitation: vicarious reinforcement/punishment, status of the model and self-efficacy.
COGNITIVE PRIMING - Cues are stored in the memory as scripts for later behaviour. Triggered in similar situations.

Pro-social effect of media. What are the studies?

A

SLT -
Sprakfin - 6 y/o children. Watched 1 of 3 films. a) Lassie helped by boy. 2) lassie not helped by boy 3) Brady bunch. Found than in a game those who watched Lassie being helped spent the most time helping a dog.
COGNITIVE PRIMING -
Stein and Friedrich - 93 pre-schoolers exposed to 1/3 types of media over 4 weeks. (Pro-social, Aggressive and neutral) It was found that those children who has watched the pro-social media showed more cooperation, affection and tolerance.

Effect of video games on pro-social behaviour - study?

A

Durkin and Barber - found positive beneficial effects for adolescents. Mental health, peer relations and closeness with family were found to be better in game players than non-game players.

Effect of video games on anti-social behaviour - study?

A

Carnagey and Anderson - All participants played a car racing game: 1) Rewarded 2) Punished 3) non-violent game. Found that those who played the game and were rewarded showed the most self-reported hostile emotions and aggressive behaviour/thoughts.
