EF Volcanos Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 layers in the earth?
A
Crust, Mantle, Outer core(liquid) and Inner core (solid)
2
Q
Which is denser:
-the oceanic crust
-the continental crust?
A
The continental crust is lighter because it sits above the Oceanic crust
3
Q
Which is thicker:
-the Oceanic
-the Continental?
A
The Continental crust is thicker with a thickness of 35km.
The Oceanic is 7km thick.
4
Q
Describe somethings about Destructive plate boundaries
A
- Move together
- The denser Oceanic crust sinks below the lighter Continental crust
- The Oceanic crust sinks below into the mantle
- it melts in the subduction zone
- may be released as an earthquake or a volcanic erupition
- The continental crust becomes crumpled into fold mountains
5
Q
Constructive plate margins….
A
- movig apart
- happens under the Ocean
- the gap left is filled with magma rising up from the mantle, below to form a volcano
- some of these have become large enough to form volcanic islands like iceland and the canary islands
6
Q
Conservative plate margins….
A
- sliding past each other in the same or oppostite directions
- sometimes called passive margins
- two plates meet at a fault and pressure builds up until 2 plates jerk past each other
- this causes earthquakes and the land at the fault becomes ridged and crumpled
- A good example is the San Andreas fault in California
7
Q
How many different plate margins are there and name them…
A
- there are 4 different plate margins
- the constructive plate margins
- the conservative plate margins
- the destructive plate margins
- the collision plate margins
8
Q
How many different plates are there and what are there names?
A
- There are 8 different ones
- The Nazca plate
- The Pacific plate
- The Northern American plate
- The Southern American plate
- The African plate
- The Antarctic plate
- The Eurasion plate
- The Indo-australian plate
9
Q
Composite and Shield Volcanoes…
A
- The composite volcano is based on the destructive plate boundary and the shield volcano is based on the constructive boundary
- the composite volcano has a narrower base than the shield volcano which has a wide base
- the composite volcano is taller and the shield volcano is short and stumpy
- shield volcano-only lava inside
- composite volcano-ash and lava
- composite-steeper slopes
- shield- gentller slopes
