EEO Midterm - Tests and Meausres Flashcards
What are the two types of outcome measures?
Clinical-based
-clinician performs the test and assesses basic function
Patient-centered / Self-report
-outcomes provided by the patient, and patient identifies what is important
Vital signs
-HR
-BP
-O2 saturation
-RR
-Temperature
-Pain
What are the pros and cons of self-report assessments?
Pros:
-best way to collect information relevant to a patient
-easy, fast, cheap
Cons:
-influenced by psychosocial factors and the patient’s interpretation
-may have unintentional accuracy of reporting
How do you know which outcome measure to select for your patient?
-Review the literature and know what the measure is assessing
-Will the results be meaningful to you and the client?
-Is the skill appropriate for the client?
-Do you have the space and time for the measure?
Nominal measures
Presents a checklist of activities, asks patients to response with either:
-yes or no
-independent or dependent
-able to do or unable to do
Very simple!
Ordinal measures
Outcome is measured in rank order, not equal intervals though
-self-reported performance that is summarized for a total score.
-more open ended
Ex. Describe your ability to walk
-No difficulty (0)
-Some difficulty (1)
-Unable to do (2)
Interval measures
-equal intervals between responses
-real numbers! Can do math with them
-Does NOT include 0
Ex. Ankle circumference
Ratio measures
-Equal intervals between responses
-real numbers! Can do math with them
-INCLUDES 0!
Ex. how many times do you go shopping each week?
-0,1,2,3…..
What is the downside of using measures with summative scores?
A patient may have a really low score in a key area or two but still have an overall high score. Could be misleading and make patient seem more functional then they really are
