Dental Abscesses and Trauma
Dental abscess is an infectious emergency and should be managed as soon as possible.
Mastoiditis
Presents as tender mass behind the ear pinna.
- Inpatient management includes blood culture and IV antibiotics.
- Outpatient management includes continued oral antibiotics.
Peritonsillar Abscess
Tonsillar infection which spreads to surrounding tissues causing necrosis and abscess formation.
Tx: Initiation of antibiotics with ENT consultation is warranted. Surgical excision and drainage can be needed.
Retropharyngeal Abscess
Infection of retropharyngeal nodes with formation of abscess.
Tx: Surgical emergency for incision and drainage. Treat with broad spectrum antibiotics.
Orbital and Preseptal Cellulitis
Acute inflammatory process caused by infectious origin.
S/S: Presenting with marked erythema and edema of the eyelid and surrounding skin.
Tx: Hospitalization, imaging, and treatment with antibiotics is warranted in most cases of orbital cellulitis. Mild cases of preseptal cellulitis can be managed outpatient.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Recognition of problem, diagnosis with sleep study, need for cardiac evaluation.
- Use of CPAP or BiPAP prior to Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy.
