EENT Flashcards
Examination of the eyes includes assessment of
visual acuity (the degree of the detail the eye can discern in an
image),
ocular movement,
visual fields (the area an individual can see when looking straight ahead), and
external structures.
Most eye assessment procedures involve
inspection
two movable structures composed of skin and two types of muscle
eyelids
two types of eyelid muscle
striated and smooth
lines the inside of the eyelids
palpebral conjunctiva
covers most of the anterior eye, merging with the cornea at the limbus.
bulbar conjunctiva
glands and ducts that serve to lubricate the eye.
lacrimal apparatus
glands and ducts that serve to lubricate the eye.
lacrimal apparatus
responsible for tear production.
lacrimal gland
Tears are channeled into the
through the
They drain into the
nasolacrimal sac,
nasolacrimal duct.
nasal meatus.
six muscles attached to the outersurface of each eyeball.
extra-ocular muscles
composed of three separate coats or layers
eyeball
The outermost layer consists of the
sclera and cornea
circular disc of the muscle that contains pigments that determine eye color.
iris
central aperture of the iris’ is called
pupil
innermost layer of the eye extend only to the ciliary body anteiorly
retina
cream-colored circular area located on the retina toward the medial or nasalside of the eye
optic disc
can be readily viewed with the aid of an ophthalmoscope
retinal vessels
3 types of charts to test visual acuity
eye chart, snellen standard chart, snellen e chart
inflammation of the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva
conjunctivitis
inflammation of the lacrimal sac
dacryocytitis
redness, swelling, and tenderness of the hair follicle
Hordeolum
inflammation of melbomian gland
chalazion
waxywhitescales(seborrheic)orinflammationofhairfollicles(staphylococcus)
blepharitis
