EEG Terms To Know Flashcards
Morphology
Describing what the wave looks like
Monophasic
(Solo)-(Direction)
A single deflection that is either up or down from the baseline
Di or Biphasic
(two)-(direction)
A deflection that has 2 components on opposite sides of the baseline and it goes up and down.
Triphasic
(three)-(direction)
A deflection with 3 components so it makes 3 different maneuvers before it returns to the baseline. (Abnormal)
Transient
When a single wave stand out from the other wave out of nowhere then goes back to normal (paroxysmal).
complex
2 different waves that appear together such as spike and V-wave and spindles.
Spike
Is a sharply contoured wave wit a duration of 20-70 msec that is abnormal and is referred to as epileptiform.
Sharp Wave
Sharp but not as sharp as spike, duration 70-200 msec. It is Abnormal epileptiform unless the patient is sleeping
Spike and wave Complex
A spike wave followed by a slow wave. It is Abnormal epileptiform.
Epileptiform Activity
Abnormal seizure activity on the EEG not necessarily during a seizure could happen in between seizures (spikes & Sharps).
Ictal
EEG Activity that happens during seizures only (Abnormal)
Interictal
EEG activity that happens in between seizures (could be normal or abnormal)
Paroxysmal discharge
One or more waves, which begin abruptly, reaches maximum amplitude rapidly disappears suddenly. It stands out from the background. It describe a transient or a bust
Rhythmical
repetitive waves with similar intervals between each wave, they are regular and sinusoidal
Arrhythmical
waves that are not on beat, they are variable and have irregular intervals
