A
- Translated Wundt’s book
- Studied with Wundt + was strongly influenced by him as he was his doctoral advisor
- Brought Wundt’s structuralism to US - changed it a bit
–> Wundt: focused on relationship between elements of consciousness
Titchener: focused on identifying the basic elements themselves

- Studied classics in Oxford but got more interested in
biology - Professor at Cornell University for philosophy and
psychology - Founded “Society of Experimental Psychologists”
- Developed a psychology laboratory in the USA

- Promoted structuralism + introspection as research method to discover the structure of the human mind
- Classified structures of the mind into basic components to determine structure of mental processes and higher thinking
–> not very influential
- Created the largest doctoral program in the US (at the
time) - First woman to be granted a PhD in psychology was his
first graduate student (1894)
