hes callous by demanding that they would beg through life and not make any provisions for them but he proberly feels incapeable of looking them in the eye againand will not nbe able toprovide for them anyway -edward is cowardly and runs away from the consequences of his actions thus negatively impacting the familky

it allows the poet/narroator/minstrel who is proforming the ballad to extend the story as long as they choosto suit the taste response of the audience sustaing their interestand the suspense until he deems it time to get to the rvevleation.It allows the listener to build up a picture of the characters of edward and his mother as we watch their words against our predictions of what may have happenede anmd our expectations of normal behaviour in such circumstances
it also brings attention to the blood on the sowrd which we disocver it is edwards fathers blood which is against nature
what elements of the poem allowed it to survive moe than 5 centuries
there is regularity to the poem which makes it easy to remember so does the use of reppitition,rhythm and the structure of lines and stanzas throughout the entire balla.the basic story as it unfolds is intriguing while also allowing room for improvising
