What were comprehensive schools

A

-by 1960s idea different schools in tripartite systems equal in states had passed
-whole system seen as socially divisive
-local education services responsible for schools + some areas e.g. lab controlled Greater London
-established ‘comprehensive schools’ where every child same opportunities learn + sit exams according to abilities
-by 1964 1/10 pupils educated in these schools but still small minority

What did crossland do to accelerate process

A

-1965 as education minister issues circular 10/65 to education authorities requesting convert to comprehensive
-many responded especially after 1966 when govt made money for new schools built
-1970 only 8 authorities failed + 1145 comprehensives

What were the successes

A

-merges + changes in school states causes disruption in early days
-some turned to direct grant schools + independent schools which meant comprehensive system flawed from start to finish
