What is The Tripartite System ?
• Two main types of secondary ; Grammar & Secondary modern, selection done by the 11+ exams / most MC children attended Grammar schools, whereas most WC children attended the Secondary modern
What is the Comprehensive System ?
• Introduced in 1965, it abolished the 11+ exams and all pupils attended the same local comprehensive school
What are the Marketisation Policies ?
• League tables / good results encourage the best ( MC pupils ), less successful schools end up with the less able students ( WC pupils )
• Funding formula / schools are funded on how many pupils they recruit, good schools get more money allowing them to improve staffing and resources
What are the New Labour Policies ?
1997-2010
• Aim to reduce inequality in education
1) Education Action Zones
2) Aim Higher Payments
3) Education Maintenance Allowance for poorer 16-18 year olds
4) Increased funding for state education
What are the Conservative Policies ?
POST 2010
• Reducing the role of the state, moving away from the comprehensive system
1) Academies / all schools become academies, some privately-owned, some funded by the government
2) Free schools / state-funded but set up and run by parents, teacher, religious groups or businesses
3) Spending cuts / Sure start, EMA, school buildings, salaries etc
4) Grammar schools / reintroduction by the government
