Before industrial revolution
- No state schools
- education was provided by fee paying skls to the well off
Late 19th century (1980)
- Increased need for an educated work force
- state began to get involved with education
- Types of education depended on their class-MC were given a curriculum to prepare them for a profession- WC schooling to equip them of basic skills for factory work
The tripartite system
Children were to be selected to one of three different types of secondary schools according to their abilities- identified by the 11+ exam.
- Grammar skls- academic curriculum- access to non manual jobs, must pass the 11+
- secondary modern skls- practical curriculum access to manual work failed the 11+
- technical skls -prepared students to work in trade such as engineering
Marketisation
Making the education system a business- increasing competition.

What skls did to promote marketisation
- Publication on league tables & Ofsted reports that rank each schools
- business sponsorships of schools
The funding formula
Sksl are given funds based on how many pupils they attract- popular skls get more funds- better facilities
GERWIT: parental choice
Identified tree main types of parents based of their economic and cultural capital.
- privileged skill choosers-MC- afford to move their children around skl for best education
-Disconnected local choosers- WC- choices were restricted- found it difficult to understand admission procedures
Semi skilled choosers- mainly WC- however we’re ambitious for children Ed- but lacked cultural capital- rely on other opinion of schools
Privatisation of education -Ball
Involves the transfer of public assists such as skls to private companies. education becomes a source of profit for capitalists-Ball- more money put into skls better facilities
Comprehensive skl system
Functionalist
11+ was replaced by comprehensive skls.- opportunity for all
+late developers benefit
+more get better qualifications
—high flyers are held back
—over looks talent
Functionalists promote this as it’s bringing children from different classes together.
Tuition fees
Scrapped for many schools- children can get a good ed for free setting them up for life
