What is socialisation?
Socialisation is the process whereby an individual learns the norms, values, customs and social skills appropriate to behave in a manner acceptable to society e.g. patience and respecting
What are the two types of socialisation?
Primary socialisation
Secondary socialisation
What is primary socialisation?
Primary socialisation is carried out in the home and this is where socialisation begins
What is secondary socialisation?
This is where socialisation is continued and reinforced during schooling
What two types of socialisation can take place in schools?
Formal
Informal
What is formal socialisation in a school?
This is socialisation in the classroom e.g. the development of moral values through the SPHE curriculum
What is informal socialisation in a school?
This is socialisation through the hidden curriculum e.g. developing the ability to share and be punctual
What is the hidden curriculum?
This is where knowledge is conveyed to students without ever being explicitly taught
Give an example of how socialisation is thought through the hidden curriculum
Using rewards and sanctions to encourage children to conform
A well-planned system of education can produce what type of individuals?
It can produce socialised individuals
When is socialisation important?
