what is marxism?
a structural theory that says social structures shape individuals’ behaviour
OR- conflict theory that sees society as being based on class division and exploitation
what is capitalism?
an economic ideology/system based on private ownership of business
who are the bourgeoisie?
the upper class-the wealthy make decisions and own the means of production (businesses/industries)
who are the proletariat?
the working class, don’t have full freedom- low wealth
what is an ideology and why do the bourgeoisie use it?
ideology= set of ideas and values which is used by the bourgeoisie to brainwash and control society
what is the ideological state apparatus?
tool of the state used to brainwash people eg school, media
what is a repressive state apparatus?
anything that controls people through force eg the police, army
what is false class consciousness?
it is where the proletariats are unaware of their exploitation and so cannot rebel against it (remain controlled)
what is class conciseness and who believes it will happen?
where the proletariat become aware of their mistreatment and exploitation and rebel against it- believed by marx
what is the idea of communist revolution?
where the proletariat rise up against the bourgeoise and take back power- due to class consciousness
who is the key theorist for social control and what do they see the education system as being? what is the supposed result of this
Althusser sees the education system as being an ideological state apparatus- tool of the state to brainwash us- this results in false class consciousness where proletariat is unaware of their exploitation
what does false class consciousness result in
means proletariat don’t rebel against the capitalist system- are controlled
how is FCC instigated in schools
through the hidden curriculum- teaches things covertly eg respecting those above you in school hierarchy, teachers and head- so you comply with capitalism
what are the AO3 points for social control
functionalists would argue that the respect for hierarchy actually keeps society going as it encourages people to work harder to achieve status-contribute to society more
what is communism
where the state owns everything and wealth is divided equally amongst citizens
