consensus theory
a theory that sees people in society as having shared interests, and believes that society functions on the basis of there being a broad consensus of values
organic analogy
society is like a body - the social institutions function in a similar way to organs. society is able to function through the organised, interconnected institutions.
primary socialisation
when a child learns values and beliefs through their family
secondary socialisation
when a child learns values and beliefs through their education
value consensus
the extent to which individuals within society share the same values
social solidarity
the cohesion between individuals in society that ensures social order and stability
collective consciousness
the shared set of values or beliefs that people in society have.

rules and values that apply equally to all members of society
meritocracy
a society whereby jobs etc. are allocted based on an individual’s talent and achievements rather than social status

when an individual’s social status is earned based on achievements etc.
