education- internal factors Flashcards
What is the impact of teacher labelling?
-teachers tend to label pupils on the basis of little information
-interactionists argue that a label can affect a person’s self-concept
-this can in turn shape a person’s behaviour and result in a self-fulfilling prophecy
-when a teacher predicts and labels a pupil as either high or low achieving, they communicate this belief to the pupil in some way
-this affects the pupil’s self-concept and they live up to the teacher’s expectations
What are some of the factors that a teacher can judge a pupil on?
-speech
-dress
-personality
-enthusiasm
-conduct
-appearance
-social class
-gender
-ethnicity
Summarise S Ball (1981)
-when banding was removed from a beachside comp, influence of anti-school subculture declined
-however, differentiation continued
-teachers still continued to categorise pupils- MC pupils more likely to be labelled cooperative and able
-positive labelling- better exam results- self-fulfilling prophecy
-conc of study- class inequalities can continue due to teacher labelling without the effect of subcultures or streaming
