What is the key evidence?
- Some ethnic groups outperform others, e.g. Chinese and Indian students
- Other ethnic/socio-economic groups such as African Caribbean and white w/c underperform
How does marketisation affect ethnic education experience?
Reproduces some inequalities as some ethnic minorities are unable to use parental choices
How does material deprivation affect ethnic education experience?
Pakistani, Bangladeshi and African-Caribbean students have a higher than average rate of poverty, meaning that they are less likely to be able to afford important school equipment and uniform
How does cultural deprivation affect ethnic educational experiences?
It is argued that some ethnic groups regard education as less important, thus leading to a lower value being placed on education and lower outcomes. Contrastingly, other ethnic groups such as Chinese and Indian families regard education as important and have above average results. Now research reveals that many white working-class families have lower than average aspirations for their children.
What does Sewell argue?
Family structure - he argues that one of the reasons for black African-Caribbeans’ underperformance is the absence of fathers, which is common in the black community.
What does Bereitier and Engelmann argue?
That some ethnic minority students lack the language that is used in schools, which places them at an immediate disadvantage.
