A social tie that connects two different groups in a social network
(E.G: Primary to Secondary socialisation = School)
Universalistic Standards
Everyone is judged by the same standards regardless of family/class/race/gender etc
(Standards which apply to everybody)
Particularistic Standards
Standards which apply to particular people
(E.G: To a child in a family)
Norms
Unwritten rules of society people are expected to follow
Values
Things people consider important to them
(E.G: Beliefs)
Ascribed Status
Status or Position in society fixed by birth
Achieved Status
Status or Position in society based on achievement
Socialisation Function
The process where individuals learn the norms and values of society
Economic Function
The specialised skills individuals learn and need for particular jobs to produce goods and services
(E.G: Certain skills needed for labour jobs like a builder/plummer)
Meritocracy
A system in which a person’s position is based on merit
(E.G: Talent and hardwork)
Society In Miniature
Durkheim - School is society in miniature
(E.G: Socialisation of children and their peers - introduction to new social groups)
Equality Of Opportunity
A system in which every person has an equal chance of success
Integration
The method of which different groups create society
(E.G: Made up of different cultures and ethnicities)
