Q

Cultural deprivation- language.

A

The way in which parents communicate with their children is vital for their success in education. Hubbs-tait says that parents who engage their children in evaluative thinking are more likely to have their children achieve. This is mostly done in middle class families.

Bernstein identified two types of language: the restricted code and the elaborated code- the one education is in favour of. The restricted code, typically spoken by the working class, entails a dialect of limited vocab, slang and gestures with simple grammar. The elaborated code-spoken by the middle classes, has more complex grammar and fuller sentences. This elaborated code is used in textbooks and other educational resources, giving the middle class students an advantage as they are used to the language of education.

Q

Cultural deprivation- Parents education.

A

Douglas argues parental attitudes have a significant impact on their child’s education. Working class parents value education less and therefore do not push as hard with work, meanwhile middle class parents who have been through the education system do value education and have the experience to guide their children through the process.
