What did Althusser believe about education
-education, like many of the ideological state apparatuses, ensure that school prepares individuals to become docile and subservient workers, under their capitalist employers (rsa - repressive state apparatus i.e police isa - ideological state apparatus i.e media, school,)
What does the ISA do?
-teaches students specialist skills they need working under a capitalist society
-education reproduces the dominant ideology of the ruling class
-reproduces and legitimises inequality
What are the criticisms of Althusser’s beliefs?
-seen as deterministic and that working class children don’t have the ability to change where they are in the social hierarchy
-functionalists believe that these functions are beneficial to society
