What does Gillbourn say about Asian students?
Teachers had high expectations of Asian students, which could lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy of success. In contrast negative labelling could result in a self-fulfilling of failure
What is a ethnocentric school curriculum?
- It is seen that the white, middle class culture is better than other ethnicities.
- In the curriculum only European languages are taught
What is institutional racism?
This is where policies and attitudes unintentionally discriminate against ethnic minority groups.
What did Wright believe about ‘institutional racism’?
Found that even though members of staff said that they were committed to equal opportunities, Asian girls got less attention from teachers and felt that their cultural traditions were disapproved.
African-Caribbean boys were more likely to be punished and sent out of class.

Material deprivation is the lack of resources that are seen as essential in everyday life.
