Education Flashcards
Introduction
Orwell displays education as a weapon to enforce control and a mechanism which elevates an individual’s reputation; where society is obliged to comply. In addition to this, society seems to respect and look up to the wise individuals as they somewhat possess and aura of authority.
There is a surreptitious/underlying depiction of forced control; whereby society is indoctrinated and forced to comply and obey the authoritative figures.
Throughout the novella, Orwell explicitly criticises the educational system, suggesting commenting on how
education although seems to bring immense power, it is also a limiting factor; education and knowledge without indication is deemed insignificance, worthless and fuels the manifestation of further oppression.
PG 1
There is a common proverbial saying “Knowledge is power”, however Animal Farm is the revelation of a much deeper proverbial - “Knowledge is power, with the accompaniment of an inclination”.
It is suggested through the novella that although knowledge gives a pedestal/ leverage to a higher level in a hierarchy/ and an authoritative reputation; it is through having the inclination which puts to test the power of the individual.
Therefore, although knowledge is an important factor which implements oppression, it is also the lack of inclination from the animals which contributes to the control they experience on the farm.

Orwell presents the pig’s intelligence and education to transform into hunger, greed and abuse.
The pigs use their intelligence as a tool of enlightenment to implement oppression, as they abuse their responsibility, thus causing a corrupt system which exploits the animals.
By convention the pigs become the leaders of the farm, through their intellectual superiority. In addition to this, the animals’ apathy fuels the pigs’ further manifestation of oppression and allows them to infringe more power/control.

Education is also presented through the character Benjamin, of which he is emblematic of political apathy. Benjamin is characterised as being the oldest and wisest animal on the farm,
however throughout the novel, Benjamin is seen as the animals which remains at the back; one who doesn’t seem to be involved in the action/doesn’t seem to contribute in the action.
In comparison, Orwell also presents education through the population of the animals – in which he relays the description of which the animals, if united are able to supersede the power and control of those in authority.

Conclusion
Education is an important factor which implements oppression if used in a corrupt format,
while also presenting the extreme side of the spectrum of education which is deemed
insignificant, if the knowledge is not actively used.
The proverbial “Knowledge is power”, is keen to be replaced by that of Orwell’s own perception “Knowledge is power, with the accompaniment of an inclination”.
