a system in which rewards are distributed based on merit
According to Durkheim, how does education effect social solidarity
Education system helps to create social solidarity by transmitting society’s culture
How do marxists see the education system
The education system serves the interests of the ruling class rather than of society as a whole.
What does Durkheim believe?
Societies have a shared culture that can be passed on by the education system- although in a multi cultural society, some shared norms and values are essential for society to hold together

Functionalists imply that pupils passively accept all that they are taught and never reject the school’s values

Evidence that equal opportunity in education does not exist-achievement influenced by class background
