Education Flashcards
functionalists theory of education
they believe that education is positive, neglect the dysfunctions i.e. bullying, inequality or failure.
three function of education {functionalism}
- secondary socialisation
- role allocation
- meeting the needs of the workplace
Neoliberal view on the role of education
the new rights view of education is very similar to functionalism such as agreeing that some people are naturally more intelligent than others, education should be meritocratic. differences is that they believe that education are not performing those functions. should be ran by private education.
Marxism view on the role of education
have similar functions like functionalism but disagree that it performs positive functions, benefits the ruling class and the capitalists system.
three functions of the role of education {Marxism}
- socialisation
- meeting the needs of the capitalist workplace
- maintaining the class system
postmodernism’s view on the role of education
they believe that education in the past used to oppress students, now education reflects upon people having diverse skills and interests. they should have their own timetables that is suited to the individual’s preference.
Fordism & Post-Fordism
Fordism - education was designed to meet a certain type of industry, produce large numbers of low skilled workers to tolerate repetitive work and mass production. its called Fordism because a company ‘ford’ was the first to introduce it.
Post-Fordism - since the economy has changed, it has shifted away from mass production low skilled jobs where now production is customised in custom markets, requires individuals with specific types of skills to fit into that role, those that are capable in handling advanced technology and transfer their skills from one task to another.
the current education system.
it encourages self-motivation, creativity. should provide people with long life training to allow people to adapt changes in their work. education emphasises the needs of individuality, therefore it encourages diversity NOT INEQUALITY.
Overall Criticisms of PM.
- some sociologists argue that education does not reproduce diversity but reproduces inequality, they feel that PM were exaggerating. its unfair against anyone within the system regardless weather they are female, working class or come from an ethnic minority background.
- Marxist’s argue that the education system still benefits the middle class and is a huge disadvantage against the working class since its based on middle class culture. reproduces class inequality.
- focuses on the individual rather than looking at the benefits of the universalistic standards which prepares students for society.
