EDU 1500 EXAM Flashcards
Challenges of working with students in poverty
Eric Jenson says teachers should ask “What do I need to do differently to meet the needs of these kids?” Because students in poverty may not have the same access to technology or other learning tools, it is important that teachers offer them those tools in the classroom. Teachers should be patient and graceful and remember that not all students have great home lives. Teachers working in schools with high levels of poverty must change their language to be enriching rather than pitying.

Legal Responsibilities of teachers
Schools are legally obligated to act as the parent (in loco parentis) when students are at school. For example, the school makes sure students are fed and receive punishment when necessary.
Teachers are legally responsibly to instruct, supervise, and maintain the safety of students. They are also legally responsible for their own education and certification through state testing and other regulations.
